Starting November 15, the Garth Englund Blood Donation Center will square off with blood in mind against Cheyenne’s United Blood Services.
This is the 4th annual friendly Border War competition between the two agencies to see which can receive the most blood donations from the public in the few days prior to the heated football rivalry between Colorado State University and the University of Wyoming. This year’s game is November 20.
The Border War between the two blood donation center helps to collect much-needed blood that can be use during the holidays. The number of blood donations in November and through early January is often down significantly compared to the rest of the year; yet, the holidays often see an increase in patient needs for blood.
“The Border War helps us avoid shortages of blood,” said Dan Bolchen, Garth Englund team leader. “We appreciate the public’s support during this competition.”
The prize for the winning blood donation center is a traveling trophy: a bronze heart. Garth Englund, where blood donations are used for patients of Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins and the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, won the Border War the first three years.
Here is the schedule where the public can donate blood to this cause:
- Nov. 15: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., café B meeting room in the lower level of Poudre Valley Hospital.
- Nov. 16: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., National Park Service, suite 150, 1201 Oakridge Drive (map).
- Nov. 18: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. USDA, building B, 3WI0, 2150 Centre Ave. (map)
- Nov. 19: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CSU, trophy room in the McGraw Building (map).
