Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are minimally invasive treatments for vertebral body compression fractures. After the anesthesia takes effect, a needle is gently moved through the bone to the front of the vertebral body. If the fracture is mild, the radiologists will perform a vertebroplasty by injecting bone cement though a hollow needle into the vertebral body. If the fracture is severe, the kyphoplasty procedure is preformed, allowing a safer injection of the bone cement. The radiologist places a tiny, high pressure balloon in vertebral body. The balloon is inflated that elevates the bone.
