How you prepare for your ultrasound depends on the specific study or studies your doctor has requested. You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for the exam. Abdomen: Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the procedure.
Abdominal aorta: Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the procedure.
Baby hips: No special preparation. Your baby must be younger than 4 months old.
Hysterosonogram: No special preparation. Schedule scan between days 7 to 20 of your menstrual cycle; you should not be bleeding.
Musculoskeletal: No special preparation.
Extremities: No special preparation.
Neonatal brain: No special preparation. Your baby must be younger than 4 months old.
OB (13 weeks to term): A very full bladder is needed. Drink 20 ounces of water 45 minutes prior to ultrasound. Do not urinate. This may feel uncomfortable, but a full bladder will provide a better image.
Renal: A very full bladder is needed. Drink 20 ounces of water 45 minutes prior to ultrasound. Do not urinate.
Scrotal: No special preparation.
Thyroid and thyroid biopsy: No special preparation.
Transabdominal non-OB pelvic: A very full bladder is needed. Drink 20 ounces of water 45 minutes prior to ultrasound. Do not urinate.
Transvaginal: An empty bladder is needed. This procedure uses a probe that is inserted into the vagina.
Transvaginal OB (1 to 12 weeks): An empty bladder is needed. This procedure uses a probe that is inserted into the vagina.
Venous: No special preparation.
Venous insufficiency: No special preparation. Allow 30 to 60 minutes per leg for the scan.
